Small Steps, Big Impact: Greater Burlington YMCA Promotes Heart Health this February

This American Heart Month, the Y is helping Burlington take charge of their heart health, one heartbeat at a time. February is American Heart Month, and the Greater Burlington YMCA is here to help you show your heart some love.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death for men and women in the U.S., and nearly 1 in 2 adults has high blood pressure – often without knowing it. According to the American Heart Association, blood pressure control has gotten worse since the pandemic, making now the perfect time to check in on your heart health.
The good news? You don’t have to make big changes overnight to make a big difference. Simple actions like getting your blood pressure checked, cutting back on sodium, eating more fruits and veggies, and moving your body daily can all help lower your risk of heart disease.

At the Greater Burlington Y, we’re making heart health easier – and more accessible – than ever with local programs designed to support every step of your journey:

Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring Program
If high blood pressure runs in your family or you’ve been told yours is on the rise, our Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring Program can help. Participants learn how to track their numbers, receive personal coaching and nutrition tips, and build habits that can lead to lasting improvements.

Research shows that monitoring your blood pressure just twice a month can lead to healthier numbers when combined with smart lifestyle changes. We’re launching our first session of this program starting on February 18.

Local Fitness Programs
From heart-pumping group fitness classes like Zumba, Indoor Cycling, and Water Aerobics, the Y offers something for every heart. Whether you’re just getting started or looking to push your limits, we’ve got the tools, trainers, and support to keep you moving in the right direction.

“Your heart works hard for you every single day,” said Dan Smith, President + CEO at the Greater Burlington Y. “American Heart Month is the perfect time to return the favor. Whether you’re tracking your blood pressure, cutting back on salt, or just getting more steps in, the Y is here to support your health journey.”
