Stop the Bleed

This class will be hosted at the Y by the UVM Medical Center.

In an emergency situation, we all have the ability to potentially save a life. No matter how rapid the arrival of professional emergency responders, bystanders will always be the first on the scene. STOP THE BLEED (www.bleedingcontrol.org) is a national campaign started by the White House to address the most common cause of preventable trauma death in the US: uncontrolled bleeding.

As a Level 1 Trauma Center, the UVM Medical Center has seen lives saved from motor vehicle crashes because another driver on the road had the skills needed to stop life-threatening bleeding. If all Vermonters are offered the opportunity to learn these bleeding control skills, think of how many more lives could be saved.

Women’s Self Defense Class
with The Safety Team

This beginner workshop utilizes both large and small group instruction. By adhering to a 5:1 student-to-instructor ratio, The Safety Team’s trauma-informed trainings focus on boundary setting, affirmative consent, and relevant sexual assault information, as well as the mental and physical skills of Empowerment Self-Defense. The overarching goal of these large-group sessions is to help women discover their collective voice, address victim-blaming by redirecting the responsibility for all assaults on to the perpetrators, improve women’s sense of power and control, and, as a result, reduce the likelihood of sexual assault and violence. This class is only available for people who are female/identify as female, and are age 14+.

Adult + Pediatric CPR/AED/First Aid

The American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers program is designed to train professional-level rescuers to respond to medical emergencies in adults, children, and infants until more advanced medical personnel take over. Participants will be trained to recognize breathing and cardiac emergencies, and to respond to such emergencies by performing CPR, using an AED, and providing any other appropriate care until medical personnel arrive. Participants will learn the proper response to sudden illnesses such as heart attack, stroke, and seizures. This training also includes a foundation of first aid for other injuries such as burns and external bleeding. You will receive your First Aid Adult, Child, and Infant CPR and AED certifications.

This is a blended learning course — there is a roughly 3-hour online training to be completed before the course. Participants must be 15 years old by the final day of class.

Dates and Times:
June 18, 9:00am – 12:00pm
July 2, 8:30 – 11:30am

Lifeguard Certification

Train to be a lifeguard! Learn lifesaving skills to help people stay safe in, on, and around the water. You must be 15 years old by the final day of class to enroll.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive two certifications: Lifeguarding Skills and First Aid/CPR for the Professional Rescuer. Additional modules, such as Waterfront skills to lifeguard natural bodies of water, may be available and require a conversation with the instructor.

This is a blended learning class — you will have 7-10 hours of course work (which your instructor will grant access to) that must be completed prior to the start of the class. To successfully complete the course, participants are expected to be strong swimmers, mature and professional, and attend all class sessions.
