Back to School, Back to Belonging: How GBYMCA Supports Families During the School Year

August marks National Back to School Month, a time of fresh starts, sharpened pencils, and new adventures for kids and families alike. At the Greater Burlington YMCA, we know that the return to school is about more than classrooms and homework – it’s about helping families feel connected, supported, and ready to thrive all year long.

Why Back to School Matters at the Y
For over 160 years, the Greater Burlington YMCA has been more than just a place to work out. We’re a hub where kids find mentors, parents find community, and everyone belongs. As kids head back to class, our programs and services help families stay strong and supported through every homework assignment, practice, and big test ahead. We also host an annual back-to-school drive to gather school supplies for those in need, with strong support each year from our generous member community.

Programs That Make a Difference
Whether it’s safe, enriching afterschool care, swim lessons, youth sports, or family activities, we offer a range of programs designed to help students grow inside and outside the classroom. Here’s how we help families ease into the school year:

  • Afterschool Programs: We know how important it is for a child to have an enriching place to learn and grow during the out-of-school hours. We have programs in Barre, Georgia, and Waterbury, plus our newest location in Burlington that starts for the 2026-2027 school year. State subsidy covers full or partial cost for qualifying families.
  • Youth Programs: From our Teen HUB to our Middle School Strength program, big kids have ways to stay active in safe spaces after school.
  • Swim Lessons & Water Safety: We offer swim lessons year round, and are launching the inaugural Safety Around Water program with the Burlington School District, giving all district fourth graders six lessons during school hours to make sure they can be safe around water.
  • Family Events & Support: August 14th is this month’s Kids Night Out so parents can do back-to-school shopping without kids in tow.

A Place for Parents, Too
Going back to school isn’t just about kids. We know parents need a moment for themselves, too. While your child is learning and playing, you can enjoy a workout, connect with other parents, or just grab a coffee and relax in our welcoming spaces.
