This year has fluctuated a lot in Michael Nichols’ life, but one thing has remained constant. “Through a lot of changes this year,” Michael shared, “the YMCA has been a consistent source of joy for me.” The Y community and his consistency has helped Michael find strength, discover new passions, and become healthier than ever at age 41.
His weekly schedule is packed with a wide variety of Y programs, including Tai Chi, Karate, Zumba, Mindful Movement, and swimming. Just two months ago, he added strength training to his routine, continuing to challenge himself in new ways.
For Michael, staying active is about much more than being fit. “My fitness is a key component of my life worth living,” he says.
“Sobriety is key,” according to Michael, when counting the biggest factors in maintaining his healthy lifestyle. The Y provides a positive environment where healthy habits can flourish, offering structure, encouragement, and opportunities to keep growing.
One of his favorite parts of being a Y member is trying things he’d dreamed about for years. He’s proving it’s never too late to learn a new skill or pursue a lifelong interest. Karate is one of those interests. “I always wanted to do karate but hadn’t had an opportunity until the Y offered it,” helping him discover new things.
Just as meaningful as the programs themselves are the people who make the Y feel like home.
“All of the teachers I’ve trained with so far have been awesome!” Michael said. He offers a special thank you to Jervaughn, Chrissy Rose, Brian, Jill, and Abby for their encouragement and support.
What has surprised Michael most, however, is the welcoming atmosphere he’s found throughout the Y community. “You all are so friendly and accepting that the YMCA has become my favorite place to be a hyperactive grown man with Autism.”
It’s a powerful reminder of what makes the Greater Burlington YMCA more than a fitness center. It’s a place where people of all backgrounds and abilities can feel accepted, supported, and encouraged to be themselves.
For Michael, the Y is more than a place to work out, and wellness is about more than exercise. The Y has been a source of stability, acceptance, and joy through life’s changes. Wellness is about finding joy, building resilience, and belonging to a community. At the Greater Burlington YMCA, he found not only new ways to stay healthy, but a community where he feels welcomed exactly as he is.
