Graham still remembers his first summer at YMCA Camp Abnaki. It was the longest he had ever been away from home, and he was nervous. But something changed as soon as he arrived.
“Camp was almost instantly like a second home to me,” he said. “Everyone was super nice, and I really just loved the environment.”
That sense of belonging that defines Camp Abnaki is possible because it helps boys like Graham feel safe, supported, and free to be themselves, year after year.
After that first summer, Graham had a tough school year. He struggled to fit in and his grades slipped. But he knew that camp was waiting.
“Coming back that year was the best feeling ever,” he said. “It made me feel like I had come really far.” That summer, Graham was named Honor Camper—a moment he’ll never forget. “It made me feel like I was the best version of myself here at camp.”
Graham has returned to Camp Abnaki summer after summer, just finishing his fifth year in 2025. He’s grown more confident each year. Camp is a place where he learned about himself, built friendships, and connected deeply with his counselors. One heart-to-heart with a staff member left a lasting mark. “He impacted both my Abnaki journey and my life journey,” Graham said.
Camp Abnaki was there when Graham needed it most and it continues to be a steady part of his journey.
“If it wasn’t for Camp Abnaki, my life would be very different,” he said. “I truly think I am my best self here.”
Being at camp helps kids like Graham find confidence, growth, and belonging. Thanks to the wonderful staff, donors, and fellow campers each year, the Camp Abnaki experience strong—for every camper, every summer.
