Y School Age Programs provide critical growth and development outside of the classroom with a fun environment where we foster positive physical, social, emotional and cognitive growth. Our curriculum compliments the school day with extended learning opportunities that include sports, outdoor play, arts, skill building clubs, literacy and more!

Y Before and Afterschool Programs are available for children in grades K-8 with full-week options and hours, designed to meet the child care needs of working families.

The Y offers flexible opportunities to candidates who may be able to work 2-3 days per week and those who are available daily afterschool. Whether you are in the midst of your your youth development educational career, re-entering the workforce, or just have a passion working with children and teens, joining the Y movement will allow for national participation in enriching the lives of our youth population.

Join the Y Movement!

As a Site Director, you will oversee a program of up to 25 school age children. As Director, you’ll guide our Y Program Staff in being leaders to school age children by implementing programs in accordance with the policies and philosophy YMCA School Age Programs. You will manage before and after school programs, develop curriculum and activities around the interests and desires of the children, create positive relationships with the children and families, the school and other Y partners, and provide strong leadership, direction and supervision to the Y program staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, supervise, and implement school age programs in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures as well as the regulations from the State of Vermont.
  • Develop effective communication styles with families and staff.
  • Build relationships with families, staff and participants through empathy, emotion management, and personal development.
  • Develop curriculum for school age program to ensure positive enrichments and activities of the participants.
  • Provide clear communication to children and families in the program, including weekly emails with program updates, prepare and plan program curriculum, and supporting staff.
  • Complete and maintain required professional development within the afterschool industry and according to Vermont licensing regulations.
  • Work to ensure program quality, including STARS requirements.
  • During program, demonstrate and maintain visual and auditory supervision of program participants; ensure complete records of all children enrolled.
  • Create and maintain the safety of all children enrolled in the program, including continual head counts and attendance and implementing emergency procedures.
  • Complete and maintain reports and documentation, as requested or required.
  • Ensure support staff maintain YMCA and state requirements (including mandated ratios, professional development, reports, staff meetings, and any assistance with guidance and direction.)
  • Participate in departmental staff meetings.

Requirements:

  • Applicants must possess a BA, BS or Associates Degree
  • At least ten (10) months experience in leading a school age group of children.
  • Demonstrate professionalism at all times.
  • Provide excellent problem solving skills and conflict resolution.
  • Be dependable and reliable.
  • Build relationships with young people with the ability to connect and lead by example.
  • Foster working relationships between the school administration and the Y program.
  • Connect with families, while building and maintaining relationships, engaging in the children’s well-being and productivity.

Join the Y Movement Today!

Our enthusiastic Afterschool Program Staff will work with our partnered schools in a part-time role, Monday through Friday during afterschool hours between 2 pm and 6 pm.

In this role, you’ll be a leader to a young people by implementing programs in accordance with the policies and philosophy YMCA School Age Programs, assisting the Site Director with overall management of the programs, and develop and facilitate activities and interests that fit the needs and desires of the children.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain visual and auditory supervision of school age participants.
  • Participates actively in all aspects and activities of the program including swim and gym.
  • Be an active participant in ongoing staff and professional development meetings and provide innovative ideas to the program.
  • Assist in planning, supervising, organizing, and execution of school age programs.
  • Execute programming as support to the Site Director in an effective, relatable and meaningful way.
  • Assist in maintaining an organized and clean space.
  • Responsible for the safety of all participants enrolled in the afterschool program, including attendance, ongoing head counts of participants and executing emergency procedures, as required or needed.
  • Report concerns to the Site Director (before speaking to parents or guardians).
  • Complete and maintain all necessary professional development requirements of the position.
  • Communicate with a respectful and positive attitude with staff, parents or guardians, participants.
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities for youth through character development, emphasizing evidence-based experiences that promote empathy, relationship building, emotion management, responsibility, and personal development, in and out of Y programs.
  • Demonstrate and teach the Y core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility throughout Y programming.
  • Demonstrate a sense of maturity when working with school age participants and sensitive issues.

Requirements:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Demonstrate patience, empathy, leadership, effective communication skills and professionalism.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Be a leader to young people by setting the example.
  • Comfort in leading activities.
  • Ability to problem solve and resolve conflict.
