Recognizing the Importance of National Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month at the Y 

June is National Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month. Worldwide, more than 55 million people are living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. Did you know that studies have shown that physical activity and social connectedness reduces the risk of cognitive decline? At the Greater Burlington YMCA, we promote the importance of physical activity at any age! Just a little bit of activity can go a long way in helping improve brain health. Check out some of our great offerings below, which can be used to start on your health and wellness journey: 

Movement for Longevity, Thursdays, 8:45-10:00am 

This class explores your joint mobility, cardiovascular strength, static and dynamic balance, movement patterns, and functional strength to work towards greater ease with daily activity. All class activities can be modified and are for all ages, but the ability to get up and down from the floor is required. Taught by a certified Physical Therapist Assistant.  

Balance, Mobility & Core, Tuesdays, 8:45-9:45am 

This class will help improve balance, mobility, and core through movements that increase joint stability, enhance posture and form, and employ core strength to better support an active lifestyle and reduce your risks for falls and fall-related injuries. Mat required for core work, followed by standing balance exercises. 

Strong Bones, Strong Bodies, Wednesdays, 8:30-9:30am 

This introductory strength training class is led by a Physical Therapist with a focus on bone health and the aging process. We will explore exercise through movement, free weights, body weight, resistance bands, Yoga asanas and great music!  

Feldenkrais, Tuesdays, 10:15-11:15am 

The Feldenkrais Method® has been taught around the world since the 1950s with the goal of improving human life through better movement, sensation, posture and breathing. Feldenkrais uses gentle movement, slow repetitive actions, and the constant reminder to “do less” to increase body awareness. It helps you learn new ways to allow your body to work more efficiently and to relieve fears, tension, and stress.   

Water Aerobics, Mon/Wed/Friday, 6:15-7:00am  

Exercise your independence during this conditioning and resistance training program. For ages 16+. Class registration is required and opens 48 hours in advance of class.  

Aqua Zumba, Tues/Thurs, 6:45-7:30am 

Aqua Zumba® blends the Zumba® philosophy with water resistance for one pool party you shouldn’t miss! Class registration is required and opens 48 hours in advance of class.  

Fresh Start Personal Training Package: (3) 45-minute sessions 

An introductory package that will help you gain confidence and get comfortable in the fitness setting. If you’d like to continue after Fresh Start, you can work with a trainer through our Up and Running packages. Register online
