Rediscovering Joy in Community: Liz’s Story with the Greater Burlington YMCA

The Greater Burlington YMCA has been a cornerstone of Liz’s life, from her childhood days as a competitive swimmer to her current journey as a busy mom balancing health, family, and adventure. Liz’s story highlights the enduring impact of the Y on individuals and families across generations.

Growing up in Burlington in the 1990s, Liz fondly remembers being part of the Dynamo swim team. “I vividly remember coming out of swim practice in the winter and having my hair freeze solid!” she recalls. Those early days not only sparked a love of swimming but also introduced Liz to the Y’s sense of community. Today, when visiting her hometown with her family, Liz still stops by the Y for swims or fitness classes. “I even ran into one of my old swim coaches in the pool!” she shares, illustrating the lasting connections she’s made.

Swimming remains a constant in Liz’s life, offering freedom and comfort, especially during challenging times. “Competitive swimming at the Y laid a foundation for a life-long love of swimming,” she says. “At times in my life when I’ve had injuries or restricted mobility, I always felt at home in the water.” For Liz, swimming is more than exercise—it’s a source of joy and resilience.

Beyond the pool, Liz enjoys exploring other fitness opportunities at the Y, from cardio and strength training to group fitness classes. Exercise has become vital to her mental and physical well-being. “It always improves my mood, even if it’s just a quick walk around the block,” she says. Yet, like many busy parents, Liz faces challenges maintaining healthy habits. With two full-time working parents in her household, finding time for everything—especially cooking healthy meals—can be difficult. Liz stays motivated by focusing on her goals, like preparing for outdoor adventures with her daughter as she grows.

To keep active, Liz incorporates fitness into her daily routine, such as commuting to work on her bike. These small but meaningful adjustments help her stay energized and focused on balancing her responsibilities.

What continues to amaze Liz is the Y’s longevity and adaptability. “That it’s still around!” she exclaims. “It has been a constant in Burlington for my entire life, and it’s been interesting to see how it’s grown and changed over the years.”

For Liz, the Greater Burlington YMCA isn’t just a gym—it’s a community where lifelong habits, connections, and memories are made. Her journey serves as a reminder of the Y’s lasting influence and its role in fostering health and happiness for those it serves.
