American Red Cross Classes

We’re pleased to be offering the following American Red Cross programs here at the Y. Whether you’re looking to get certified, or to be re-certified, we’re here for you.

We can also bring these trainings to you! Do you need First Aid or CPR training for your staff? The Y offers corporate First Aid and CPR classes and will send the instructor to you. Have your staff trained in your own facility on your own time.

Basic CPR and First Aid — Blended Learning

This course teaches participants the knowledge and skills needed to give immediate care to an injured or ill person and decide if advanced medical care is needed. You will receive your First Aid Adult, Child and Infant CPR and AED certifications.

This is a blended learning class, so on-line course work is required prior to the start of the class and physical distancing protocols will be in place for the in-person training located at the Y at 298 College Street. You will receive more details once you’ve registered.

Lifeguard Certification

Looking for a rewarding job? Train to be a lifeguard. Our comprehensive Lifeguard Training course includes accident prevention, lifeguarding techniques, emergency systems, and rescue skills. Course will also include the waterfront module, as well as CPR for the professional Rescuer with AED and First Aid.

This is provided as a blended learning class with 7-10 hours of course work that MUST be completed prior to the start of the class. We will also make use of ZOOM for a portion of the class. Upon registering, you will receive an email from the instructor with details regarding class & safety protocols.

– Minimum age: 15 years
– Swim 300 yards continuously.
– Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.
– Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Dates/Time: The class meets four Sundays, Oct. 3, 17, 24 & 31 from 8am-1pm

Lifeguard Re-Certification Course

Are all of your certifications up to date? Test your skills to assure you can keep people safe in and around the water. This re-certification is only for those with a current certification. Per American Red Cross rules, those with an expired certification are expected to enroll in the full certification class.

This offering is a blended learning class, where course work will be provided by the instructor to complete ahead of time and in-class portions will be in the pool. The instructor will be in touch regarding COVID-19 safety protocols. Babysitter’s Training Course

This course provides youth ages 11-15 who are planning to babysit with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly give care for children and infants. This training will help participants to develop leadership skills, learn how to develop a babysitting business, keep themselves and other safe and help children behave, as well as learn about basic child care and basic first aid. Children will not become CPR and 1st Aid certified.

Lifeguard Instructor Course

The Lifeguarding Instructor (LGI) course trains instructor candidates to teach American Red Cross student-level courses including Lifeguarding, Waterpark Skills, and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers. This instructor course does not teach student-level lifeguarding skills and knowledge. Participants must come to class already knowing student-level lifeguarding content.

Prerequisites: Instructor candidates must be at least 17 years of age by the course end date. Candidates must have a current (not expired) lifeguard certification that has been active for one year, and a current professional-rescuer CPR/AED certification. Candidates must complete online pre-course homework prior to the first day the class meets – info will be emailed to candidate once registered for the course.

The Lifeguard Instructor Update class is for those who hold a current Life Guard Instructor Certification.

Waterfront Lifeguarding- for Current Lifeguards

The purpose of the Waterfront Skills module is to teach lifeguards the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to emergencies in nonsurf, open-water areas found at public parks, resort, summer camps and campgrounds.  Candidates must have a current American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED.

CPR PRO & First Aid Certification Course

Learn how to recognize and handle emergency situations, administer first aid, help someone with breathing and cardiac emergencies, and perform CPR on adults, children and infants as well as AED use and 2 rescuer CPR. This course also covers basic precautions for preventing disease transmission.
