Peter Burns brings a wealth of experience, passion, and community spirit to his role at the Y. A Burlington-area resident since 1981, Peter currently lives in Winooski and gets around town by bike. His commitment to learning and service extends far beyond his work at the Y—he also works for the Howard Center and leads programs for Vermont Humanities.
“I enjoy reading and learning new things,” Peter shares, reflecting a mindset of continuous growth. That same enthusiasm spills into every area of his life. Whether he’s exploring a new book or engaging with the community, Peter radiates a sense of curiosity and compassion. He’s also an avid cook, finding joy and creativity in the kitchen, a hobby that mirrors his thoughtful and nurturing nature.
At the Y, Peter plays a vital role in teaching swim lessons. When asked about his favorite part of working at the Y, he says, “I enjoy teaching pre-school children to swim.” His calm, supportive presence in the water helps the youngest swimmers gain confidence and develop foundational skills that will serve them for a lifetime.
Peter also emphasizes the personal benefits of being involved with the Y: “I enjoy being part of the Y community and I love swimming laps.” For him, it’s not just about teaching others—it’s about maintaining his own health and well-being through physical activity and social connection. The Y is more than just a workplace; it’s a place where he feels a sense of belonging and purpose.
One of the most inspiring aspects of Peter’s story is how he lives the Y’s mission through his everyday actions. He recalls a powerful “mission minute” that perfectly illustrates the long-term impact of his work: “Last week in the sauna I saw a woman who I gave lessons to a few years ago. When we started she was very afraid of deep water and her goal was to jump into the deep end of the pool. It took a lot of courage but she did it! I was grateful to be part of her adventure.”
This moment, like so many others in Peter’s journey, speaks to the heart of what makes the Y special—helping people overcome fears, build skills, and find community support. Peter’s story is a reminder that every lesson, every encouraging word, and every small breakthrough contributes to a larger ripple effect of positive change.
Through his work, his passions, and his connection to the community, Peter Burns exemplifies the Y’s values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. We’re grateful to have him on the team and proud to celebrate the difference he makes every day.
