Fran & Dave

“I am Y” tells the stories of Y members and staff and the transformative power of community. This is Fran’s and Dave’s story:

Fran: “We became members almost 32 years ago.”

Dave: “I joined the Y after being sidelined from running by plantar fasciitis. I tried new things at the Y. Ultimately, I was able to run again, and I played basketball for 10 years at the Y. I competed in the Senior Olympics on a basketball team.

“The Y helped us explore different sports together. We discovered a passion for water games at the Y almost 20 years ago, and we’re still doing it. I love the competition.

Fran: “We laugh a lot and congratulate each other, even if we’re on the wrong team. We don’t like to get up early, but we wake up for that class because we know our buddies are going to be there. What we love about the Y is that we have friends there. We look for them and they look for us.

“I also lost 100 pounds over a 10-year period. Exercise definitely makes a difference. And if I don’t do it, I really miss it. I want to be in the water. I love the water. I guess I’m part fish.
