“I am Y” tells the stories of Y members and staff and the transformative power of community. This is Alan’s story:
“I joined the Y because I was feeling old. Immediately, I saw how welcoming a place it was – especially for old guys like me.
“Everybody is welcoming, patient, and accepting – no judgment. When I walk in, they say, “Hey, Alan, how are you doing? Good to see you.” I know that they’re there, and they’re there for me.
“I have done lots of work on flexibility and posture with Ryan. He is one of the best listeners I’ve ever met. He’s attentive to my pace, my needs, my wishes, and my skills. He is there for me.
“Today, I feel stronger, slightly straighter, and more graceful. I feel less pain and discomfort. I can walk to work and feel good at the end of it. Things that require ups and downs are easier for me, too – like playing with my dog, Ollie, and working in the garden. It feels so good.”
