Introduction to Fencing

Students will be introduced in the sport of fencing! Students will learn safety rules, skills involving the “on guard” stance, advance, retreat, and lunge, basic knowledge of parries and blocks, good sportsmanship, impulse control, critical thinking, and observation skills. Coach Geoff Butler has taught fencing since 2009.

Ages: 7-16 years old

When:Tuesdays, September 19 – November 7 from 4:00-5:00pm

Cost: $120

Equipment: Equipment rental is included in the cost of the program. We will be using training gear appropriate to for the age of the group approved by “Fencing in Schools”. Equipment includes face mask, plastic epee, and chest protector that lights up and buzzes when hit. Students should wear long pants and long sleeve shirts as well as appropriate athletic shoes.

Requirements: Each student must have a US Fencing Association noncompetitive membership. This is good for one year and it cost $10. Each student will need to have a waiver signed by parent or guardian. All forms will be provided prior to the start of class.




Map and Compass

Students will learn basic map and compass navigation by LL Bean’s Outdoor Discovery School! Even with modern technology, the best foundation for navigation know-how is still having map and compass skills. Come learn how to stay on course with our experts. Class will be held outdoors, please dress appropriately.

Grades: 5-8

When: Wednesdays, September 20 – November 8, from 2:30-3:45pm (no class October 18)

Where: Students will meet in a classroom prior to heading outside
