The Winooski Y and the City of Winooski are working together to provide a wide variety of "healthy living" opportunities for Winooski residents. Many new classes such as Adult Kickball, After School Self Defense, High School Flag Football, Adult Recycled Art, Fitness Playgroup and Get Moving Winooski will be taking place this fall. Adult Recycled Art Class (Ages 21 and up) Reduce, reuse, recycle, and make art! In this art class you will make interesting and beautiful creations using everyday recycled materials such as cardboard, magazines, paper, bottles, and much more. Projects will be both sculptural and two-dimensional. Some materials will be included, but start saving your recyclables and come in with a creative mind! Mondays 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm $50 members / $70 non-members After School Self Defense Class (Ages 12 and up) Learn self defense techniques while gaining self confidence and fitness. Students will be taught how to avoid and escape conflicts and harmful situations. Improve flexibility, coordination, balance and discipline. Thursdays 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm $30 members / $50 non-members Get Moving Winooski Time to get fit Winooski residents! or 655-9622 for more information. Mom & Toddler Fitness Playgroup (Ages 2 and up) Come get fit with your child in this new program that includes story telling, sing a longs and creative movement. Moms get fit while kids play and sing with a Y instructor. Wednesdays 10:30 am - 11:30 am $5 per class per Mom Nutrition and Cooking (Ages 18 and up) So you don't know the difference between a saute and a sear, a braise or a bouillabaisse? Have you been thinking it is time to learn more about nutrition and cooking but don't know where to turn? Problem solved! Come join me for a 4-week class that will give you the knowledge and skills to prepare healthy, delicious, quick and inexpensive meals. I will alternate one classroom-based nutrition class with one cooking demonstration class. In this 4-week program you will receive two nutrition classes and two cooking classes. Instructor: Stuart Offer, Kansas City BBQ Judge and Cooks Illustrated and Cooks Country Recipe Tester. Thursdays 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm (4 weeks starting 9/9/10) $100 members / $150 non-members Tai Chi (Ages 16 and up) Gentle martial art that focuses on breathing and concentration. Appropriate for adults of all ages and fitness levels. Recommended to help ease arthritis pain. Thursdays 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm (September 23 - November 4) $200 per team High School Flag Football League at Landry Park (Ages 14 - 18) This new league will allow participants to enjoy the benefits and love of the sport without having to wear pads and tackle. Run, catch, block, kick, sack and score touchdowns in this semi-contact game. Teams play 7-on-7 with flags and team uniforms required. Skateboard Club at Landry Park (Ages 7 - 12) Check out this 4 week skateboard club taught by the expert Talent Skate Team! Participants will learn the basic skills of riding, taking on ramps and simple tricks such as the ollie and kickflip. This is a great club for someone new to skateboarding or someone who would like to brush up on their skills. Wednesdays 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm (September 15 - October 6) $20 members / $30 non-members Junior Chefs (Ages 5 - 8) A fun and nutritious cooking class for school age children! Students will learn cooking and baking basics while taking on a different recipe each week. Thursdays 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm (October 7 - 28) $30 members / $50 non-members Tiny Tots (Ages 12 months - 2 1/2 years) You and your toddler will have a wonderful time meeting new friends and burning energy in this active class filled with dance, music, games, tumbling and more. Mondays 10:30 am - 11:10 am $45 members / $65 non-members Creative Movement for Preschoolers (Ages 2 1/2 - 4) This class is a playful combination of ballet, improvisational dance, gymnastics and yoga. Parents are welcome to participate. Tuesdays 9:30 am - 10:15 am $45 members / $65 non-members Beginner Ballet (Ages 3 - 5) A great first class for your budding ballet star. Students will learn basic positions and practice beginner ballet techniques through fun, imagination inspired games. Saturdays 10:30 am - 11:15 am $45 members / $65 non-members Ballet II (Ages 4 - 5) Must have taken a previous Beginner Ballet class. Your child can take their next steps into the exciting world of ballet. Students will use skills gained in Beginner Ballet to create combinations and routines. Saturdays 11:30 am - 12:15 pm $45 members / $65 non-members Creative Dance-Making (Ages 11 - 14) Using compositional techniques including improvisation, we will practice making dance performances. Each class will begin with a modern dance warm-up, move into choreographic practices and end with a showing of what was made. No experience necessary; everyone welcome! Thursdays 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm (October 7 - 28) $30 members / $50 non-members Beginner Basketball (Ages 5 - 7) Over the course of this 4 week program children will learn to improve basic basketball skills such as dribbling, passing and shooting. There will be an emphasis on having fun! Children will also get the opportunity to scrimmage each week. Wednesdays 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm (October 6 - 27) $25 members / $35 non-members Autumn Adventure Camp (Ages 5 - 12) Our two-day Autumn Adventure Camp program offers your children a full day of theme based fun activities such as gym, games, arts & crafts, exciting field trips and more! Basic Run Training Improve your endurance! Learn techniques to improve your cardiovascular capacity, proper run form and workouts to improve your time and distance. Receive pointers from Trainers Ally Gould and Steve Gaydos on proper clothing and footwear, using a heart rate monitor and other topics. Finish the session with a celebratory 5k! Wednesdays 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm $35 members / $50 non-members Strong Knees Conditioning Program (Ages 21 and up) This strength program will focus on specific exercises to increase knee stability, strength and range of motion.
