The Greater Burlington YMCA offers year round, quality school age childcare programs serving youth in kindergarten through 8th grade.

The Greater Burlington YMCA School Age programs started in 1985, serving approximately 30 children at two sites. Program Philosophy
The YMCA School-Age Program philosophy states that school-age children need a safe, stimulating environment after school where they can develop in a positive manner. Staff foster this development by offering age-appropriate activities that include social, physical, creative and emotional opportunities for growth. School-age children are an integral part of the curriculum planning and implementation and are empowered to make their own choices regarding how they spend the after school hours.

    Our Goals
    * To be the best after-school program that we can be.
    * To help children develop to their fullest potential physically, intellectually and socially.
    * To deliver the program in a safe, fun, supportive, caring and positive environment.
    * To support and strengthen the family unit.

    Program Staff
Qualified and experience staff foster positive development by offering developmentally appropriate activities to promote social, physical, creative, and emotional growth. While the State of Vermont mandates a 1:13 staff to child ratio, for quality reasons the Greater Burlington YMCA makes every attempt to maintain a 1:10 staff to child ratio.

    Curriculum
Children are empowered to contribute to the range of activities offered and are empowered to make their own choices about how they spend their time in the program. An emphasis on character development is woven into each program with an emphasis on caring, honesty, responsibility, and respect. Each program also participates in a wellness program that involves monthly physical challenges for children (i.e. sit ups, push ups, etc.)

Y After-Kindergarten Program (Offered only at Thatcher Brook Primary School and Ferrisburgh Central School) - The Greater Burlington YMCA is pleased to offer an after-kindergarten program at Thatcher Brook Primary School. This play-based program is designed to compliment the kindergarten hours by offering an extended day of care. Our developmental approach provides a blend of teacher-directed and self-directed learning experiences. Thematic units incorporating dramatic play, arts, stories, music, sand, water, outdoor play, and hands-on science will be offered in our exciting, activity centered classroom.

Y Ventures Middle School Program at CHMS & BRMS - This program provides youths grades 5-8 who attend Camel’s Hump or Brown’s River Middle School. These programs are developmentally geared to older school age and middle school youth. Similar in activity options to Y AfterSchool, this program puts more of an emphasis on enrichment opportunities that stress recreation, skill development and community involvement. Ample homework time is allotted as well. Y Ventures is designed for children to participate on a regular weekly basis or on a short term basis determined by activity options. Please use the Y AfterSchool registration form for Chittenden and Washington Counties for these programs. Y Summer Camp - Y Summer Camp is a summer school age program offered at the YMCA, and some surrounding area schools. Y Summer Camp offers a full day care option from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in one week sessions offered throughout the summer. Y Summer Camp incorporates developmentally appropriate activities each day that include sports, recreation, arts and crafts, and much more.
