![]() Comment: "Not too crazy about the new person answering the phone. Why the change? You need to keep the voice you had. At least that voice sounded friendly." YMCA's Response: Thanks for your feedback! The thought was that perhaps in a fun way we would have various YMCA staff on a monthly basis do the phone greeting. We simply looked at it as a way to introduce (or reintroduce) a number of the staff who try to make the YMCA a special place for all. But we've received negative feedback about this, so we are going back to the original voice mail message with a fresh voice.” ![]() Comment: "It is very evident that the lifeguards are not trained. I have seen them eating, doing homework, reading and text messaging while on duty along with standing in the doorway to both pools talking among themselves and not looking at the pools. I certainly do not have to tell you of the danger of these behaviors. They also cough and sneeze directly at the pool of swimmers without covering their face or mouth. A little training here please!" YMCA's Response: Thank you! Training, I agree, but don’t forget the follow-up observations, which it appears were lacking. Believe me, there is nothing that will more quickly grab our attention than a compromise on our attention to safety and risk. Thank you for sharing your concerns. As you can imagine, I followed up right away with Aquatics Director Tad Hoehl. Here is Tad’s response: "I wanted to follow up on the obviously horrendous suggestion/criticism card you received regarding my lifeguarding staff in the pool. First, let me say that I take these comments very seriously as these are serious issues mentioned. It’s true, in the past I’ve had guards take it upon themselves not to follow the rules I have trained and laid out for them. These guards are no longer employees. It’s very difficult to monitor the pool at all times, but with Jaimie, we have maintained a consistent presence in the pool area and have recently not found many issues at all with the way our staff is guarding the pools. I truly wish the person who left the comment card had left some kind of contact info so that I could follow up and get a better sense of who they are referring to. Trust that Jaimie and I are training our staff with safety as our number one concern. Please let me know if you have any follow up questions or more information you can share with me. If you have any way of finding out who left the comment card, please forward to me so I can follow up. Thanks very much and again I apologize that you have to receive so disheartening of a comment/suggestion. I can only hope you don’t feel that’s the current situation in the pool area." You can help us out considerably by detailing the date and time of your concern. Better yet, if you (which I trust you won’t) see something of concern, please report the occurrence at once to the Y’s Members Services Staff. Again, thanks!
